Research Interests: Maternity care, training health workers in resource poor settings and health policy related to quality.

Other Academic Activities: Health workforce development, expansion of residency training to neighbor island sites

Awards: Yale Johnson and Johnson International Physician Scholars Award

Other interests: Dr. Hixon is an avid jazz drummer who also enjoys skiing and sailing. He loves spending time with his four sons, particularly at the beach.

Previous experience:   

  • Prior to medical school he managed international programs including working in Southeast Asian refugee camps.
  • After residency he joined the faculty at the University of California-Davis.
  • Prior to joining the University of Hawaii, Dr. Hixon served as Residency Program Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program at the University of Connecticut for 5 years.
