People and Cultures of Hawaii: The Evolution of Culture and Ethnicity
The University of Hawai’i, Department of Psychiatry unveiled their new book, People and Cultures of Hawaiʻi: The Evolution of Culture and Ethnicity on May 15, 2011 at the Waikīkī Aquarium.
The book is a significant update to the highly influential text that was first published in 1980. Since then, the immigrant groups it discusses in depth have matured and new ones have been added to the mix. The present work tracks the course of these changes over the past 20 years, constructing a historical understanding of each group as it evolved from race to ethnicity to culture. Read more…
People and Cultures of Hawai’i: The Evolution of Culture and Ethnicity is available on the UH Press website.

Cross Cultural Health Care Conference II
The Cross Cultural Health Care Conference: Collaborative and Multidisciplinary Interventions will be held on October 7-8, 2011 at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Resort and Spa.
Featuring the UH DoP Research Division:
Youth violence is a complex and multi-faceted issue, requiring attention from multiple disciplines including health professionals. In response to this issue, the Asian/Pacific Islander Youth Violence Prevention Center (APIYVPC) at the University of Hawai‘i Department of Psychiatry has compiled a “Resource Manual for Health Professional Education in Culturally Effective Youth Violence Prevention.” This two-hour workshop aims to provide information and tools to assist health professionals to address youth violence in a variety of clinical settings, and in a culturally relevant manner. The first hour will review recent research on ethnic disparities in youth violence, including research conducted with local populations, as well as implications for prevention. The second hour will take a hands-on approach to discuss the manual’s application to youth violence prevention, early detection, and intervention in a clinical setting.
Register before July 31, 2011 and save on your registration fee. Please visit http://www.cchc-conference.com/home_page for more information.
