Workshops

Fellows and Associates participate in 1-3 day professional career development workshops throughout the two-year training program. The aim of the workshops is to supplement curriculum with intense, hands-on learning and personal and professional skill development in critical areas such as:

  • Grantsmanship,
  • Interdisciplinary team-building,
  • Ethics,
  • Presenting and publishing,
  • Job search,
  • Conference/symposium organization,
  • Animal care and biosafety requirements, and
  • Protocol development.

 

Workshops (presenters) Subject matter and Aims
Interdisciplinary Team-building Workshop (IGERT Faculty) Methods and skill development for effective collaboration and teamwork in the context of scientific problem solving involving individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Grantsmanship & Grant writing Workshop (IGERT Faculty) Methods and skill development to become a successful grantee of private foundations and federal agency (NSF and NIH) support.
Biological Safety Workshop (University Environmental Health and Safety Office) Policies and procedures for containment to reduce or eliminate exposure of laboratory workers, other persons, and the outside environment to potentially hazardous agents.
Animal Care and Use Workshop (University Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee personnel) Responsible care and use of animals for research, including rules, procedures and protocols required by the IACUC in accordance with State and Federal laws and guidelines.
Responsible and Ethical Conduct of Research (IGERT Faculty) Issues and challenges faced in a research setting concerning appropriate behavior involving the collection, analysis, and sharing of data; approaches to resolution approaches
Writing and submitting scientific papers (IGERT Faculty, publisher) Overview on scientific publishing and detailed guidance on how to prepare and successfully submit a high quality scientific paper. Also will include a section on how to peer review a scientific paper.
Research Career Tracks and Job Search (IGERT Faculty) Survey of career options, the types of positions in the private and public sectors available to IGERT Fellows following the completion of their Ph.D.s, including post-doctoral training; how to conduct a successful job search.
Human Resources and Personnel Management (University Office of Human Resources) Focus on policies and procedures required in hiring and supervising personnel; interpersonal skill development and approaches for addressing personnel management issues.
