Greta Aeby leads the Marine Disease Research Lab, which performs studies of coral, fish and crustose coralline algae diseases in Hawaii (main and northwestern Hawaiian Islands) and in other areas of the Indo-Pacific. Using a combination of field surveys and laboratory investigations, including histopathology and microbiology, she documents lesions in marine organisms and determines their potential causes.

Shannon Bennett is the head of the Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Unit of the Asia-Pacific Institute of Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases. She studies the molecular evolution and epidemiology of infectious diseases and is particularly interested in the evolutionary ecology of zoonotic infectious diseases.

Brian Bowen studies the connectivity of marine reef fishes to resolve the life history traits that influence dispersal and population separations, to test evolutionary models for how biodiversity is generated in the sea, and to define management units.

Dr. Cann has been interested in how humans have altered their own landscape, as well as that of other species, for her entire professional life as a biologist. Her research concerns include, human molecular evolution, mitochondrial genetics, especially genetic conflicts of interest, Hawaiian conservation biology, and avian malaria, host-parasite coevolution and detection in multiple host communities. Currently she has two foci of interest: indigenous people of the Pacific and endangered Hawaiian forest birds. Dr. Cann collaborates extensively with behavioral ecologists and anthropologists and encourages her students to develop multidisciplinary approaches to their particular questions of interest.

Dave Carlon is interested in the origin and maintenance of species boundaries in tropical corals and the genetic structure of keystone species on coral reefs. He is currently using population genetic techniques to identify the sources and sinks of important herbivores on Hawaiian coral reefs, with the hopes that this research will inform management decisions.

Josh Cinner’s research investigates the socioeconomic factors that drive successful marine conservation, exploring the ability of communities to maintain traditional management practices and the applicability of Western conservation models to developing countries. He also studies resource abuse such as overfishing, ecological impacts from coral bleaching, and the ecological impacts of coral bleaching.

Dr. Gubler’s research interests include arbovirology, zoonotic pathogens, and emerging zoonotic diseases. Amy is a doctoral student in the Department of Microbiology and is part of the collaboration between Mahidol University and the University of Hawaii. She is currently working on her dissertation research in Thailand under the supervision of Dr. Shannon Bennett, Dr. Pattamaporn Kittayapong and Dr. Bruce Wilcox. Her research concerns the evolutionary ecology of infectious diseases, with a particularly interest in mosquito species diversity and emerging arboviruses and the microdynaimcs and epidemiology of dengue in a two vecotor system.

During previous lives Holly was a technical writer, computer programmer, and an astrophysicist. In summer 2008 she completed a transition into the life sciences, with a master’s degree in tropical conservation biology at the University of Hawai’i at Hilo. Her research thesis involved a study of the morphology and genetics of the diadematid Echinothrix sea urchins of Hawai’i. She is now a PhD student in the Zoology Department at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, with interests in marine biodiversity, speciation, epizootiology, and the evolutionary effects of anthropogenic stressors upon marine life.

Dr. Kaneshiro helped found the Hawaii Evolutionary Biology Project. From this project he worked with colleagues to launch the University of Hawaii’s graduate program in EECB (Ecology, Evolution and Conservation Biology), of which he was chair between 1991 and 1999. He also aided in the establishment of the Secretariat for Conservation Biology, now known as the Hawaii Conservation Alliance. In 1993 with funding from the state and federal governments and the MacArthur Foundation, Ken started CCRT (Center for Conservation Research and Training) at the University of Hawaii.

Jo-Ann Leong, Ph.D., is Director of the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Zoology from the University of California at Berkeley and her Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of California School of Medicine. Amy Luers is program manager of environment and vulnerability mapping for Google.org’s Predict and Prevent Emerging Threats Initiative. Prior to joining Google.Org, Amy directed the Climate Program for the Union of Concerned Scientists California’s office and spent 10 years working on water resources management in Latin America and California. Amy is co-founder and former executive director of a small NGO dedicated to supporting rural water supply in Latin America. Her research and publications have focused on issues of vulnerability and adaptive capacity to global environmental changes and on climate policy. Amy holds a Ph.D. in environmental science and an M.A. in international policy studies, both from Stanford University, and a M.S. and B.S. in environmental resources engineering from Humboldt State University.

From a B.B.A. in Accounting from The College of William and Mary, and a career as an information technology consultant, Rodolf has entered the UH Zoology program. He is interested in invasive species, particularly the epifaunal community that inhabits one of Hawaii’s five invasive algae, Gracilaria salicornia. Rodolf’s research will explore the possibility of invasional synergisms occurring within the epifaunal community, leading to a possible ‘invasional meltdown.’

In his research, John Pandolfi strives to integrate long-term ecological and environmental time series data over broad spatial scales to elucidate past and potential influences of natural variability and human impact on coral reef resilience. Jonathan Patz, MD, MPH, is Professor of Environmental Studies & Population Health Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he directs a university-wide initiative on Global Environmental Health. Originally from Tucson, Rebecca attended the University of Arizona where completed her B.S. in Ecology and her M.S. in Natural Resources. Her research focuses on positive ecological interactions between species in benthic marine environments, specifically interactions involving settlement processes, habitat structure and microbial biofilms. She is also studying how humans can manage both watersheds and near-shore marine resources as a continuous unit.

Dr. Daniel Rubinoff is an Associate Professor of Entomology and Director of the University of Hawaii Insect Museum. His research is focused on the use of phylogenies constructed with molecular and morphological characters to describe patterns in the evolution of ecological traits in insects, as well as systematics, invasive species, conservation biology, and evolution.

Jennifer Schultz studies the evolution of animal behavior and the conservation of marine species (Hawaiian monk seals, lemon sharks, and pygmy angelfish) and ecosystems. She works with Brian Bowen in the Department of Zoology.

Mark Speck’s interests include microbial ecology, coral disease, and the effects of microbial populations on coral disease. He earned a B.S. in Biology from Rutgers University where he continued on as a laboratory technician working in microbial ecology laboratories. That work spanned diverse environments ranging from coastal estuaries to deep-sea hydrothermal vent systems. Mark earned his masters in Microbiology at the University of Hawaii and now is exploring the microbial communities associated with Pocillopora coral mucus for his dissertation work.

Dr. James Spencer is the Director of the University of Hawaii Globalization Research Center where he focuses on environmental issues in developing countries, especially urbanization in Southeast Asia, the governance of water and sanitation, emerging infectious diseases, environmental security and urban inequality. His research includes urbanization, infrastructure development and planning, urban planning and health, economic development, and public policy.

Argon works with Dr. Shannon Bennett, carrying out phylogenetic comparisons of Dengue virus strains to find evidence for genotypic changes correlating with variations in virulence and epidemic severity.

Panpin, a biology student from Thailand’s prestigious Mahidol University, is a Ph.D student in the Department of Tropical Medicine. She has been an integral part of IGERT’s Thai research efforts, spending extensive time in the field assisting staff and fellow students.

Sophie O. Vanwambeke is a geographer with a background in remote sensing and land use science who focuses on the links between the environment, including human land uses, and vector-borne diseases transmission.

Dr. Wilcox’s interests include human-ecosystem interactions, within the context of human health, and sustainable land and natural resource management and policy. His current research focuses on interdisciplinary applications of ecology, including human ecology and the ecosystem health model to humans in place-based communities. He has experience in cross-disciplinary integration involving conservation, ecology and health sciences. His research interests also includes infectious disease ecology, the linkages between community, culture and health, population biology, and conservation biology.

Mayee is currently pursuing a PhD in the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology under the direction of Dr. Bruce Wilcox. Her research involves investigations in a local watershed on the ecology of leptospirosis, a tropical infectious zoonotic disease that is endemic amongst small mammals in Hawaii.
